SFA Workshop 2

Writer's picture: hssphi07hssphi07

In our second workshop, we demonstrated the concept of capillary action and density with scientific activities such as revealing drawings on water and making a rainbow tower (due to difference in the density of sugar). Even though a month had passed since our first workshop with them, they still remembered our names and who we were:)

We started out by teaching them how to say the names of colors in English since both activities would be using different colors. We then asked the kids to find specific drawings hidden in a worksheet and taught them how to say the objects in English as well. They drew one or two of the pictures of objects they found on a tissue paper so they can be used for our first experiment, in which the other side of the tissue paper without the picture revealed the drawing when they placed on a bowl of water.

The pictures came out nicely- I think the fact that the children drew something different from one another with various colors played some role in it. At least, it certainly looked colorful when we put the papers we used up in a pile!

For the next experiment, after showing them how to do it in front of everyone, we divided them into four groups, so they could all get a chance to work on making the tower. One of the kids in my group accidentally moved the table slightly, causing the solutions in the bottom to get mixed. Thankfully, the rest of the parts were distinctly separated. The kids were very attentive to all the instructions and managed to follow along well!😊

This time, because two of our members, including me, could play the violin, we played a short violin duet for them as well. As the children didn't really have the chance to listen to or even look at such instruments often, they were very interested about it. We ended the session with a group picture before their lunch time started.

We planned and worked hard to make this an educational and enjoyable time for the kids, and I myself loved helping and interacting with each one of them. I hope they had a good takeaway from our second workshop and that they enjoyed their time with us as much as we did!
