Dentist Shadowing #1 (7/22/23)

On my first day of shadowing, I started out by learning about the different branches of dentistry (shown in the picture above).

Then, I got to watch a procedure on a patient- it frightened me a little at how much the patient was groaning, but it was also nice to see him feel better after the check-up. The dentist asked me to inject the patient with a syringe (he told me it was vitamins and minerals for the body). It was safe to say that I was terrified (mostly nervous) at this point, as it was my first time doing anything like it. I could actually feel my hand trembling. When I tried pressing the syringe slowly, the injection didn't move at all, so I put a little bit more pressure on it. So, what happened? The syringe went in too fast and made a small 'pop' sound. The second I heard that, I knew I had messed up, and I was extremely worried that I had injured the patient in any way. Thankfully, it wasn't anything too serious and nothing really happened. In fact, the dentist took over right away, and took care of my mistake. Still, I was bawling the second I got back home for an entire 20 minutes, literally pleading to my mom to not let me go there anymore.

Now, after almost a full month after my first day, I am glad I continued going to the clinic, even though it might be because I haven't seen anything practical after that and mostly focused on theory. I got to -and still am- learning new things I haven't thought of or knew before, and while this new experience can be difficult from time to time, I hope it can help me grow as a person! After all, that's what new experiences are for!
